 3. The Echoing { ਏਕੋਇੰਗ } Green by William Blake  William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. ‘ The Echoing Green’ is written by William Blake. The poem tells about three stages of life. The first stage is childhood. Rising sun, singing birds, playing children share idea of childhood playfulness. The second stage is maturity. The old people in the ground remember their past. They feel themselves in playing children. Sun set, darkness, games coming to an end suggest death, the last stage of life.     The sun does arise , and make happy the skies, the merry bells ring, to welcome the spring The skylark and thrush, the birds of the bush, sing louder around, to the bells’ cheerful sound While our sports shall be seen on the Echoing Green   Q1. 12th   Once Upon A Time ‘ Once Upon a Time’ is written by ‘Gabriel Okara’. The poem criticizes  { ਆਲੋਚਨਾ ਕਰਨਾ} the modern life. Modern man is hypocrite { ਪਾਖੰਡੀ }. He does not show what he feels. His behavior is always artificial { ਦਿਖਾਵਟੀ}. He laughs without being happy. He says good bye when he means good riddance { ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ / ਪਿੱਛਾ ਛੂਟਾਉਣਾ }. The poet does not like this artificial behavior. He wishes for old simplicity     And I have learnt too, to laugh with only my teeth, and shake hands without my heart. I have also learnt to say ‘goodbye’, when I mean ‘good riddance’ To say ‘glad to meet you’ , without being glad; and to say ‘it’s been nice talking to you’ , after being bored.   Q1.
