ਪੈਕੇਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁੰਦਰ, ਮਹਿੰਗੀਆਂ ਕੰਘੀਆਂ, ਸਾਈਡ ਕੰਘੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬੈਕ ਕੰਘੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸੈੱਟ ਸੀ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਡੇਲਾ ਨੇ ਬ੍ਰੌਡਵੇ ਦੀ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਦੀ ਖਿੜਕੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਆਮ ਕੰਘੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਉਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਉਪਕਰਣ ਸਨ ਜੋ ਡੇਲਾ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਰੀਦ ਸਕਦੀ ਸੀ। ਕੰਘੀਆਂ ਉਸਦੇ ਲਈ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਸਨ, ਉਹ ਹੁਣ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਸਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਡੇਲਾ ਨੇ ਹੁਣੇ ਹੀ ਵਾਲ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ, ਡੇਲਾ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਫੜਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੰਝੂਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮੁਸਕਰਾਇਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਤੋਹਫ਼ੇ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਮ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ।

11. How had Jim managed to?

Ans. He sold his gold watch to bring the present for Della.

Long Answer Questions

1. Expenses had been greater than she had calculated. Why? 

Ans. Della wanted to buy a Christmas present for her husband. She had been saving for several months. But she could save only one dollar and eighty seven cents. She could not save more because expenses had been greater than she had calculated.  The rent of their was very high .All the furniture was also on installments.Because twenty dollars per week was simply insufficient for two people’s needs. Basic necessities like rent (eight dollars), food, utilities, and other unavoidable costs always exceeded expectations.

ਡੇਲਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਮਸ ਦਾ ਤੋਹਫ਼ਾ ਖਰੀਦਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਕਈ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬੱਚਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਡਾਲਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਾਸੀ ਸੈਂਟ ਬਚਾ ਸਕੀ। ਉਹ ਹੋਰ ਬੱਚਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਖਰਚੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਗਣਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਸਨ।

2. Describe the incident of Della’s selling her hair in your own words. 

Ans. Della wanted to buy a Christmas present for her husband. But she did not have enough money for that. She had been saving for several months. But she could save only one dollar and eighty seven cents. So she sold her hair to buy a Christmas present for her husband. She went to a shop and sold her golden beautiful hair just in twenty dollars.Then she bought a platinum watch chain for Jim's golden watch.

ਡੇਲਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਮਸ ਦਾ ਤੋਹਫ਼ਾ ਖਰੀਦਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇੰਨੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਕਈ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬੱਚਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਡਾਲਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਾਸੀ ਸੈਂਟ ਬਚਾ ਸਕੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਮਸ ਦਾ ਤੋਹਫ਼ਾ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਾਲ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤੇ।

3. Why was Della pleased with her selection of the present for Jim? 

Ans. Della wanted to buy a Christmas present for her husband. She had planned for  something nice and fine for Jim. She searched the whole town. She found a platinum chain for Jim’s gold watch. ( . Jim had a gloden watch.Before him, it had beed his father's and grandfather's. Della bought a platinum watch chain for Jim’s gold watch. The watch chain was simple in design but beautifully crafted and well-made. Made of platinum (an expensive precious metal), it was both elegant and durable. As soon as Della saw it , she said that it was the right present for Jim. The chain cost was twenty-one dollars.) Question no. 6 

ਡੇਲਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਮਸ ਦਾ ਤੋਹਫ਼ਾ ਖਰੀਦਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਜਿਮ ਲਈ ਕੁਝ ਵਧੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਲੱਭਿਆ। ਉਸਨੂੰ ਜਿਮ ਦੀ ਸੋਨੇ ਦੀ ਘੜੀ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਪਲੈਟੀਨਮ ਚੇਨ ਮਿਲੀ। ਇਹ ਸਧਾਰਨ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਵਧੀਆ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।

4. Why does the story writer call Jim ‘a poor fellow’? 

Ans. Jim was only twenty years old. His income was very small. He earned only twenty  dollars a week. The house was in poor condition Della and Jim lived in a rented furnished flat .The rent of this flat was eight dollar s for a week. The flat / house was small.The sofa was small.Their clothes were very old.There was a dirty little couch in their house. All the furniture was also old and in bad condition. The narrator says that “you see signs of poverty wherever you turn your eyes,” .Their financial circumstances was not good. Expenses were more than salary. They were living a miserable life of poverty. So, the story writer calls Jim ‘a poor fellow’. 

ਜਿਮ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਵੀਹ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦੀ ਆਮਦਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਵੀਹ ਡਾਲਰ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਘਰ ਦਾ ਕਿਰਾਇਆ ਅੱਠ ਡਾਲਰ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਸੀ। ਘਰ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਮਾੜੀ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਕਹਾਣੀਕਾਰ ਜਿਮ ਨੂੰ 'ਇੱਕ ਗਰੀਬ ਆਦਮੀ' ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

5. What do you think about the expression in Jim’s eyes? Was it shock, surprise or 

anger? Why? 

Ans. Della sold her hair to buy a Christmas gift for her husband. When Jim came home, he simply looked at her with a strange expression on his face. When he first saw Della with her hair cut off, he stopped at the doorway and stared at her with a strange, fixed expression that Della couldn’t read and that terrified her. It was neither anger nor surprise, just an odd, intense stare. He looked at her continuously without speaking. His strange reaction was due to shock at the coincidence, he had just bought expensive combs for her long hair.

ਡੇਲਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਮਸ ਦਾ ਤੋਹਫ਼ਾ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਾਲ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਜਦੋਂ ਜਿਮ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ 'ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਜੀਬ ਜਿਹੇ ਹਾਵ-ਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਵੱਲ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਇਹ ਸਦਮਾ, ਹੈਰਾਨੀ ਜਾਂ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।

6. Both of them gave each other the gift of rare love. How? Explain 

Ans. Jim’s gold watch and Della’s long hair were the two most precious things in their house. Della sold her hair to buy a Christmas gift for Jim. She bought a platinum watch chain for Jim's golden watch.It was simple but well made .It was a suitable present for him . Jim had his heirloom golden watch. Jim sold his watch to buy a christmas gift for Della. He bought set of combs for his wife Della.Set of combs was beautiful and expensive.. Thus, both of them gave each the gifts of true love.

Rewrite the following in the Indirect form of Narration

Answer:

1. Speaking with difficulty, Jim asked Della if she had cut off her hair.

Della replied that she had cut it off and sold it. She asked Jim if he didn’t like her just as well, without her hair.

2. Della told Jim that he didn’t have to look for it. She urged Jim to be good to her because she had done it all for him.

3. Della asked Jim if it wasn’t lovely. She added that she had hunted all over the town to find it and Jim would have to look at his watch a hundred times a day then. She asked Jim to give her his watch as she wanted to see how it (the chain) looked on it.
