Ans. One morning the author of ‘Bed Number-29’ was  walking on a busy street.Suddenly     he was hit/ struck by a fast moving car. As a result of this accident,the author got injured and lost his eyesight at the spot.

ਜਵਾਬ: ਲੇਖਕ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਦੇ ਵਾਰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਈਮ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਉਹ ਉਸਦਾ ਵਾਰਡਮੇਟ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਲੰਗੜਾ ਵੀ ਸੀ। ਲੇਖਕ ਵਾਂਗ, ਨਈਮ ਵੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ। ਦੋਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਲਈ ਉੱਥੇ ਦਾਖਲ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।

लेखक अस्पताल के वार्ड में नईम नामक एक व्यक्ति से मिला। लेखक की भान्ति नईम भी अन्धा था। उन दोनों को वहां आंखों के ऑपरेशन के लिए भर्ती किया गया था।

Naeem urged/ motivated the author to start painting again. He would describe a scene and the author would paint it on a canvas. Naeem would praise the paintings highly. Thus the author regained his confidence.

नईम ने लेखक से दुबारा पेन्टिंग शुरू करने का आग्रह किया। वह किसी दृश्य का वर्णन किया करता और लेखक इसे चित्रपट पर चित्रित किया करता। नईम चित्रों की बहुत प्रशंसा किया करता। इस प्रकार

Ans. . Naeem urged/ motivated the author to start painting again.The author was anxious that since he was blind, his paintings would not be good. However, when  Naeem praised every painting of author. Naeem  called him/ author  a genius for every painting, he regained his confidence and began to believe in his talents more.

ਨਈਮ ਨੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ/ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਲੇਖਕ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗਾਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਗੀਆਂ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਜਦੋਂ ਨਈਮ ਨੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ੰਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਨਈਮ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ/ਲੇਖਕ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਕਿਹਾ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਮੁੜ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ।

लेखक अपने दूसरे आप्रेशन की असफलता पर गहरा निराश हुआ। उसने इस पर अपना अन्तिम रुपया खर्च कर दिया था। यह नईम था जिसने उसे ढांढस बन्धाया और उसकी सहायता करने की

पेशकश की।

Ans. When the author’s second operation failed, the author laid down on his bed and buried his head in the pillow, feeling depressed again.He had nothing . He had spent his last rupee on it.Naeem was his wardmate. He was also blind like him. He consoled him when his /the author 's second operation failed.

ਜਦੋਂ ਲੇਖਕ ਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਆਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਫੇਲ੍ਹ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਲੇਖਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਿਸਤਰੇ 'ਤੇ ਲੇਟ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਸਿਰਹਾਣੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਉਦਾਸ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਖਰੀ ਪੈਸਾ ਇਸ 'ਤੇ ਖਰਚ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ। ਨਈਮ ਉਸਦਾ ਵਾਰਡਮੇਟ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਵਾਂਗ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਦਾ /ਲੇਖਕ ਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਆਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਫੇਲ੍ਹ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

6. How did the author of ‘Bed Number-29’ get the money to get operated the third

 time? Who helped him?

Ans. He got the money by selling his paintings. Naeem helped him. He bought his paintings.

ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗਾਂ ਵੇਚ ਕੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਕਮਾਏ। ਨਈਮ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗਾਂ ਖਰੀਦੀਆਂ।

It was Naeem who helped the author. He would keep with himself each painting made by the author, and would give him the money. He would say that a rich man liked the paintings and bought them.

यह नईम था जिस ने लेखक की मदद की। वह लेखक के द्वारा बनाई गई प्रत्येक पेन्टिंग को अपने पास रख लेता और उसे पैसे दे दिया करता। वह ऐसा कह दिया करता कि एक धनी आदमी को पेन्टिंगैं

Ans. The author of ‘Bed Number 29’ got the money from selling his painting to an art lover.According to Naeem,he was his friend.When he told Naeem that he could not afford the third operation, Naeem tried to persuade the author to take money from him. When the author refused to take his money out of pride, Naeem planned a trick. He pretended that he had a rich friend who was an art lover and would like to buy his paintings. The author believed him and sold his paintings, but the author didn’t know the reality.Actually Naeem helped him .He took/ bought his all painting and left the hospital.

'ਬੈੱਡ ਨੰਬਰ 29' ਦੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗ ਇੱਕ ਕਲਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਚ ਕੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਮਿਲੇ। ਨਈਮ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਉਹ ਉਸਦਾ ਦੋਸਤ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਨਈਮ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਤੀਜਾ ਆਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਵਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਨਈਮ ਨੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਸੇ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਲੇਖਕ ਨੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਸਦੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਲੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਨਈਮ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਚਾਲ ਚਲਾਈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਅਮੀਰ ਦੋਸਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਲਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗਾਂ ਖਰੀਦਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਲੇਖਕ ਨੇ ਉਸ 'ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗਾਂ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ, ਪਰ ਲੇਖਕ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਦਰਅਸਲ ਨਈਮ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗ ਲੈ ਲਈ/ਖਰੀਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

Ans. Naeem was not at bed number twenty nine when the author came back to the room. He had left the hospital because he had no money to pay for his third operation. Actually he spend all his money to buy painting of author.So he had to leave the hospital.

ਜਦੋਂ ਲੇਖਕ ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਨਈਮ ਉਨੱਤੀ ਨੰਬਰ ਬੈੱਡ 'ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਛੱਡ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਆਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਲਈ ਪੈਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਦਰਅਸਲ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਦੀ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗ ਖਰੀਦਣ 'ਤੇ ਖਰਚ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਪਿਆ।

Ans. No, the author did not know that Naeem was also blind like him. Because Naeem

 described the scenes in detail.

Ans. No, the author did not know that Naeem was blind like him. When Naeem spoke of the beautiful scenery, the author thought that Naeem was looking outside the window and describing the scene outside in great detail. He thought that the paintings were genuinely mind-blowing because of the praise he got from the wardmate. He was shocked when he learned from the nurse that Naeem was blind just like him.

9. Why could Naeem not get his treatment done?

Ans. Because he had spent all his money in buying the paintings of the author.

ਨਈਮ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਵਾ ਸਕਿਆ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਆਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਲਈ ਪੈਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਦਰਅਸਲ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਦੀ ਪੇਂਟਿੰਗ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਲਈ ਖਰਚ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਲੇਖਕ ਕੋਲ ਵੀ ਪੈਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਉਸਨੇ ਜਾਣਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਪਿਆ।

10. How did the author feel when he learnt that Naeem had left the hospital because

 he had no money for the treatment?

Ans. The author got upset. His eyes were filled with tears.

ਲੇਖਕ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਹੰਝੂਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਗਈਆਂ।

The author was deeply shocked. He was unable to move for some time. His eyes were filled with tears.He was thinking that he will not get back  his eyesight again.

लेखक को गहरा सदमा महसूस हुआ। वह कुछ समय के लिए हिल भी न सका। उसकी आंखें आंसुओं से भर गईं।

Ans. The author was first in shock and disbelief when he learnt that Naeem had left the hospital because he had no money for the treatment. He then asked the nurse why he had no money, which shows that he was confused why his wardmate suddenly did not have enough money for the treatment.

Naeem himself was an artist. He had painted four paintings of different seasons. He had described the colours of these very paintings to the author.

नईम स्वयम् एक कलाकार था। उसने चार विभिन्न मौसमों की पेन्टिंगें बनाईं थीं। उसने इन्हीं पेन्टिंगों के रंगों का वर्णन लेखक को किया था।

Ans. Naeem described each of the four seasons in great detail. This was because he used to be a painter too and he had made four paintings, each representing each season. When he lost his eyesight, he lost his passion for painting. This also shows that Naeem knew the importance of art, and that it is not just pretty to look at, but has the ability to inspire and motivate people.

12. What does the message “The goddess of art smiled on me….. and then it vanished” mean?

Ans. Goddess of art refers to Naeem who helped the author. He went away in the end.

The author had regained his eyesight after the operation. Now he hoped that he would be able to see Naeem who had helped him so much. But when he read Naeem’s letter, all his hope was dashed.

लेखक को आपरेशन के बाद आंखों की ज्योति फिर से प्राप्त हो गई थी। अब उसे आशा थी कि वह नईम को देख पायेगा जिसने उसकी इतनी मदद की थी। परन्तु जब उसने नईम का पत्र पढ़ा तो उसकी सब आशा खण्डित हो गई।

Ans. When the author asked the nurse where Naeem was, the nurse handed him a letter that Naeem wrote for him. In the letter, Naeem wrote the message “The goddess of art smiled on me…. and then it vanished”. This meant that Naeem used to paint just like the author did. However, due to his illness, he lost his passion for art. This also means that Naeem understood the author’s depressed state when he could not paint any longer due to his blindness. Therefore, he did everything he could to make sure that the author never lost the zeal he had for painting landscapes.

Ans. In my opinion, being Naeem would be better. Naeem is a soft-spoken and cheerful man. His optimism and motivational demeanor would make me more approachable and friendly. If I were like Naeem, I would motivate people to follow their passion and dreams. My inspiring words and caring nature would cheer people up and I would be admired and respected for my selfless and kind nature. People would be in awe of the way I inspire blind people despite being blind myself.
