Ans. During the time of drought when rice was not available and rice mills were not in operation. He would leave the town and visit rural areas / countryside to gather small amounts of rice, even if it were only enough to fill two baskets. While many others were struggling, He would sell it at a very high rate and earn huge profits.

ਸੋਕੇ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਚੌਲ ਉਪਲਬਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਿੱਲਾਂ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ/ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੌਰਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੌਲ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਦੋ ਟੋਕਰੀਆਂ ਭਰਨ ਲਈ ਹੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੋਰ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਉਹ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਉੱਚੀ ਦਰ 'ਤੇ ਵੇਚਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਮੁਨਾਫ਼ਾ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ।

Ans. He loathed the rice bags when he worked under his father. He disliked the ricee because he did not want ( ਵਾਂਟ = ਚਾਹੁਣਾ) to stay ( ਸਟੈ = ਰਹਿਣਾ) in the shop.

Ans. These were the days of Subbiah’s childhood .He was then a young boy.He   served as an unpaid apprentice to his stern father. He remained in the shop, handling the rice sacks and learning the business . Like other boys/ children he longed  to watch  movies, sports,circus  and the public life. He was not allowed to leave the shop . He hated / loathed  rice then because it was symbolic of association, discipline, and loss of his freedom.

ਇਹ ਸੁਬੀਆ ਦੇ ਬਚਪਨ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਉਦੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਤਨਖਾਹ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਿਖਿਆਰਥੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਹ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ, ਚੌਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੋਰੀਆਂ ਸੰਭਾਲਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰ ਸਿੱਖਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ। ਦੂਜੇ ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ/ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਉਹ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ, ਖੇਡਾਂ, ਸਰਕਸ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਤਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਤਰਸਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੂੰ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੂੰ ਉਦੋਂ ਚੌਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਫ਼ਰਤ / ਨਫ਼ਰਤ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਸੰਗਤ, ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੇ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਸੀ।

Ans. His profits increased because he sold ( ਸੋਲਡ =ਵੇਚਣਾ )the rice at high price during the war. He did not follow the rules. He bribed ( ਬਰਾਇਬਡ =ਰਿਸ਼ਵਤ ਦੇਣਾ) the officer.

Or

Ans. During the war his profits always increased because he always sold the rice at high price .   The price of rice surged due to a shortage in supply. He didn't follow the rules laid down by the government. In reality, he recorded fake records,He bribed the officers who came to check his stock and accounts,  and concealed his rice in godowns. He had continued his way of abusing and lying to people while posing as a good citizen.

ਯੁੱਧ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਸਦਾ ਮੁਨਾਫਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਵਧਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਉੱਚੀ ਕੀਮਤ 'ਤੇ ਚੌਲ ਵੇਚਦਾ ਸੀ। ਸਪਲਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਮੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਚੌਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਵੱਧ ਗਈ।। ਉਸਨੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ। ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਉਸਨੇ ਜਾਅਲੀ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤੇ, ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਸ਼ਵਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੌਲ ਗੋਦਾਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਛੁਪਾਏ, । ਉਸਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਾਗਰਿਕ ਵਜੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੁਰਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਣ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ।

Ans. Subbiah also lent money ( ਲੇਂਟ ਮਨੀ- ਪੈਸੇ ਉਧਾਰ ਦੇਣਾ) at high interest ( ਹਾਈ ਇੰਟਰਸਟ - ਜਿਆਦਾ ਵਿਆਜ ) to earn more money.

Ans. Besides selling rice, Subbiah also lent out money at exorbitantly high interest rates; when the borrowers  ( people )  failed to pay him back, he simply seized/ acquired their possessions. Ultimately, he acquired properties, houses, and land. Subbiah’s greed was not limited to his trade; he extended the grasp ( ਪਕੜ )  of his trade to exploit an individual’s financial distress ( ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਤੀ ਤੰਗੀ .) Thus he earned more and more money.

ਉੱਤਰ: ਚੌਲ ਵੇਚਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਸੁਬੀਆਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਵਿਆਜ ਦਰਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਉਧਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ; ਜਦੋਂ ਉਧਾਰ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ (ਲੋਕ) ਉਸਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਫਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਬਸ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜਾਇਦਾਦਾਂ ਜ਼ਬਤ ਕਰ ਲਈਆਂ/ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਈਆਂ। ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਉਸਨੇ ਜਾਇਦਾਦਾਂ, ਘਰ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਨਾਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਈਆਂ। ਸੁਬੀਆਹ ਦਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਉਸਦੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ; ਉਸਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਤੀ ਤੰਗੀ ਦਾ ਫਾਇਦਾ ਉਠਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਦੀ ਪਕੜ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਇਆ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਪੈਸਾ ਕਮਾਇਆ।

Q 6. Who came to buy rice one evening when Subbiah was about (ਅਬਾਓਟ- ਲਗਭਗ) to go home? Did he give rice to him? What did he say?

Ans. A poor man came to buy rice one evening when Subbiah was to go home . At first, he did not give rice to him. But in the end, he agreed to give rice.

Or 

Ans. One evening, a penniless poor  man came  into Subbiah’s shop and begged for rice for his starving children and old mother. Subbiah was touched by the man’s tale of a starving family, but he did not offer him rice directly. He took the man’s half-rupee coin and told him to wait, acting as if he would leave the shop to find rice stocked with someone else. He instructed / said  the man not to follow him, and he disappeared.

ਉੱਤਰ: ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਮ, ਇੱਕ ਕੰਗਾਲ ਗਰੀਬ ਆਦਮੀ ਸੁਬੀਆ ਦੀ ਦੁਕਾਨ 'ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬੁੱਢੀ ਮਾਂ ਲਈ ਚੌਲ ਮੰਗਣ ਲੱਗਾ। ਸੁਬੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਚੌਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਦਾ ਅੱਧੇ ਰੁਪਏ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਕਾ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਲ ਚੌਲ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਨਾ ਆਉਣ ਦੀ ਹਦਾਇਤ ਕੀਤੀ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਗਾਇਬ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

Q 7. How much rice did Subbiah agree to sell to him and for how much?

Ans. He agreed to sell him half seer (ਹਾਫ਼ ਸ਼ਿਰ - ਅੱਧਾ ਸ਼ੀਰ) of rice for half a rupee.

Ans. Subbiah agreed to sell a man half a seer of rice in exchange for a half-rupee. The price was outrageous/ high , but the man had no choice: his family was hungry. The man paid him the money, but Subbiah never came back with the rice.

ਉੱਤਰ: ਸੁਬੀਆਹ ਇੱਕ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਧੇ ਰੁਪਏ ਦੇ ਬਦਲੇ ਅੱਧਾ ਸੀਰ ਚੌਲ ਵੇਚਣ ਲਈ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਕੀਮਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਆਦਮੀ ਕੋਲ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਕਲਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ: ਉਸਦਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਭੁੱਖਾ ਸੀ। ਆਦਮੀ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਪੈਸੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਪਰ ਸੁਬੀਆਹ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਚੌਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ।

Q 8. Why did Subbiah ask the man to wait? What reasons (ਰਿਜਨ - ਕਾਰਨ)did he give?

Ans. He asked the man to wait because he did not want to show him his secret godown. So he told the man that he had to bring ( ਬ੍ਰਿੰਗ - ਲਿਆਉਣਾ )rice from some other man.

Or 

Ans. Subbiah told the man to wait because he said that the rice belonged to another person who was dubious and would refuse to sell to him if he saw someone with Subbiah. It was a lie to cover the location of his secret godown and he did not want to show him his secret godown . He took the money from the man  and disappeared, Actually he told a lie and mislead this poor man.

. ਸੁਬੀਆਹ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਚੌਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਸੁਬੀਆਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਵੇਚਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਉਸਦੇ ਗੁਪਤ ਗੋਦਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਕਾਉਣਾ ਝੂਠ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਪਤ ਗੋਦਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿਖਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਸੇ ਲੈ ਲਏ ਅਤੇ ਗਾਇਬ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਨੇ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਗਰੀਬ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁੰਮਰਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ।

Ans. He went to the his  secret godown (ਸਿਕ੍ਰੇਟ ਗਡਾਊਨ - ਗੁਪਤ ਗਦਾਮ / ਗੁਪਤ ਭੰਡਾਰਨ )to get the rice.

Ans. Subbiah put on a sly act and pretended to go in one direction, but indeed, he turned and went to his secret godown, where illegally hoarded rice was stored. He wanted to keep the location a secret from everyone.This godown was situated in a back street.

ਸੁਬੀਆ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ, ਉਹ ਮੁੜਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਪਤ ਗੋਦਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਗੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਚੌਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਟੋਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸਥਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਗੁਪਤ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਗੋਦਾਮ ਇੱਕ ਪਿਛਲੀ ਗਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਸੀ।

He came in the evening and waited till morning. .He walked around the streets for a while, went back to the shop, and eventually, one last time, he knocked at Subbiah’s house,Then he went to Subbiah’s wife.The wife said Subbiah had not returned, she took him to the godown, trying every single way to find him.

ਹਾਂ, ਆਦਮੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਮੀਦ ਨਾਲ ਘੰਟਿਆਂਬੱਧੀ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਰਾਤ ਪਈ, ਤਾਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। . ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੇਰ ਤੱਕ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ। . ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਦੇਰ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਘੁੰਮਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ, ਦੁਕਾਨ 'ਤੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਇੱਕ ਆਖਰੀ ਵਾਰ, ਉਸਨੇ ਸੁਬੀਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਦਸਤਕ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਸੁਬੀਆ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਕੋਲ ਗਿਆ ਜੋ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਗੋਦਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਗਈ, ਉਸਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ।

DISCUSSION

Q1. Only the dishonest can prosper. Speak for and against the statement.

Ans. In support of the statement, Subbiah’s story exemplifies how dishonest people can exploit systems, corrupt officials, and hoard wealth within the acceptable bounds of respectability. Subbiah became immensely wealthy and benefited from the suffering of many during a crisis by cheating. He lived a rich lifestyle as a “player” while cheating others. Ultimately, Subbiah’s wealth was short-lived and came at a cost to his moral standing. 

In contrast / against to the statement, with respect to “prosperity”, true prosperity includes peace of mind, respect from others, and satisfaction from one’s ethical motivation, none of which Subbiah had at the time. Subbiah’s ending crushed under a pile of his own hoarded rice confirms that dishonest contributions can lead to temporary prosperity at best, and not ultimate success. So in general terms, this does suggest that dishonest contributions to “prosperity” could bring temporary benefits, but nothing that endures.

Ans. Subbiah’s life serves as a sad lesson about greed and its destructive nature. His pursuit of money blinded him from humanity and compassion. He preyed on the poor, hoarded food and skewed the system in his favor to maximize the gains to his businesses. While a man was begging for a handful of rice to feed his starving family, Subbiah chose money over mercy. Not only did his greed ruin his character, but ultimately, it resulted in his demise. He died a troubling death crumpled under-upcacked sacks of rice with a half-rupee stuck in his hand to keep his profits. A painful reminder that unbridled greed deseminates, ending in disaster and death, but does not represent true success.
