We see two sides of Rahim Khan’s character in this story. He was loving as well as beastly. He used to be a very cheerful boy in his youth. He had an intense desire to join a touring circus. He wanted to marry a Hindu Girl named Radha because he loved her.

But both these ambitions of Rahim Khan were most cruelly trampled by his family and society. As a result, his heart was filled with bitterness. And from a cheerful young man, he became a heartless devil. But when the sparrows came in his life, they rekindled the hidden goodness of his heart.

They brought out the true self of Rahim Khan. He was very kind at heart. He gave his life for the sake of those little creatures. Thus we see that Rahim Khan was a nice human being. It was only his circumstances that had made him cruel.

इस कहानी में हम रहीम खाँ के चरित्र के दो पहलू देखते हैं। वह प्यार करने वाला भी था और पशु-समान भी। वह अपनी युवावस्था में एक बहुत हंसमुख व्यक्ति हुआ करता था। वह एक भ्रमणकारी सर्कस में भर्ती होने की तीव्र इच्छा रखता था। वह एक हिन्दू लड़की से विवाह करना चाहता था।

लेकिन रहीम खाँ की इन दोनों इच्छाओं को उसके परिवार तथा समाज के द्वारा बड़ी निर्दयतापूर्वक कुचल दिया गया। परिणामस्वरूप, उसका दिल कड़वाहट से भर गया और वह एक हंसमुख नौजवान से एक निर्दय शैतान बन गया। लेकिन जब चिड़ियां उसके जीवन में आईं तो उन्होंने उसकी छुपी हुई अच्छाई को जागृत कर दिया।

One day, Rahim Khan saw a sparrows’ nest near the roof of his hut. There were two baby sparrows in the nest. He had a mind to destroy the nest and finish off the sparrows. But the mother-sparrow attacked him when he tried to touch the baby sparrows.

The mother-sparrow’s love for its young ones moved Rahim Khan’s heart. A strange feeling of pity arose in him. He made friends with the sparrows. He would feed them and play with them. He developed a deep love for them. The sparrows transformed Rahim Khan completely. They rekindled the goodness of his heart.

रहीम खाँ अपनी पत्नी तथा अपने पुत्रों के साथ दुर्व्यवहार किया करता था। उसके क्रूर व्यवहार के कारण उसकी पत्नी तथा उसके पुत्र एक-एक करके उसे छोड़कर चले गए। लेकिन उसे यह भी एहसास हुआ कि किस तरह वह औरत, जिससे वह घृणा करता था, उसके जीवन का एक अंग बन गई थी।

एक दिन रहीम खाँ ने अपनी झोंपड़ी की छत के निकट चिड़ियों का एक घोंसला देखा। घोंसले में चिड़ियों के दो बच्चे थे। उसका दिल किया कि वह घोंसले को नष्ट कर दे तथा चिड़ियों को मार डाले। लेकिन जब उसने चिड़ियों के बच्चों को छूने की कोशिश की, तो मां-चिड़िया ने उस पर हमला कर दिया।

अपने बच्चों के प्रति मां-चिड़िया के प्रेम ने उसके दिल को पिघला दिया। उसके दिल में करुणा की एक विचित्र-सी भावना जागृत हो गई। उसने चिड़ियों से मित्रता कर ली। वह उन्हें दाना डालता तथा उनके साथ खेलता। उसने उनके लिए गहरा प्रेम विकसित कर लिया। चिड़ियों ने रहीम खाँ को पूरी तरह से बदल कर रख दिया। उन्होंने उसके दिल की अच्छाई को पुनर्जागृत कर दिया।

First, he wanted to join a touring circus. Secondly, he wanted to marry a Hindu girl, Radha. But his parents killed both these ambitions. They did not let him join the circus. They got him married to a Muslim girl against his wishes. All this brought about a big change in Rahim Khan’s nature. He used to be very cheerful. But now he became very bitter and cruel.

He began to ill-treat his wife, children and even his bullocks. He came to be hated and feared. But when the sparrows came in his life, they kindled the hidden goodness of his heart. He came out as a kind person. This was his true self.
