The sun doth arise

And make happy the skies,

The merry bells ring

To welcome the spring

The skylark and thrush

The birds of the bush

Sing louder around

To the bells’ cheerful sound,

While our sports shall be seen

On the Echoing Green.

Explanation.:-  This poem brings us a scene of a village green on a warm afternoon in the late spring. The sun rises. With the rising of the sun the skies are bright. Happy church bells ring to welcome the spring season. The skylark and the thrush who live in the bushes sing loudly in tune with the cheerful sound of the bells. On the village green plain voices echo. Now the sports played by boys and girls will be seen.

ਵਿਆਖਿਆ:- ਇਹ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਬਸੰਤ ਰੁੱਤ ਦੇ ਅਖੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਨਿੱਘੀ ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹਰੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਨਾਲ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਚਮਕਦਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬਸੰਤ ਰੁੱਤ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਚਰਚ ਦੀਆਂ ਘੰਟੀਆਂ ਵੱਜਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਝਾੜੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਕਾਈਲਾਰਕ ਅਤੇ ਥ੍ਰਸ਼ ਘੰਟੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨਾਲ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰੀਆਂ ਸਾਦੀਆਂ ਆਵਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਗੂੰਜਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਹੁਣ ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੇਡੀਆਂ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦਿਖਾਈ ਦੇਣਗੀਆਂ।

Old John with white hair

Does laugh away care,

Sitting under the oak

Among the old folk.

They laugh at our play,

And soon they all say;

Such, such were the joys

When we all girls and boys.

In our youth time were seen

On the Echoing Green

Explanation.:-  Here the poet says that Old John with grey hair laughs away his cares and worries. The old people keep sitting under the oak tree. They laugh at the play of boys and girls. They say that they were young once. These pleasures of playing on the Echoing Green were also enjoyed by them. According to them, the Echoing Green of the village was a symbol of a happy day.

ਵਿਆਖਿਆ.:- ਇੱਥੇ ਕਵੀ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਲੇਟੀ ਵਾਲਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੌਨ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਚਿੰਤਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਸ ਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬੁੱਢੇ ਲੋਕ ਓਕ ਦੇ ਦਰੱਖਤ ਹੇਠ ਬੈਠੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਖੇਡ 'ਤੇ ਹੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਜਵਾਨ ਸਨ। ਈਕੋਇੰਗ ਗ੍ਰੀਨ 'ਤੇ ਖੇਡਣ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਅਨੰਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵੀ ਮਾਣੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਈਕੋਇੰਗ ਗ੍ਰੀਨ ਇੱਕ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਦਿਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਸੀ।

Till the little ones, weary,

No more can be merry;

The sun does descend,

And our sports have an end.

Round the laps of their mothers

Many sisters and brothers,

Like birds in their nest,

Are ready for rest,

And sport no more seen

On the darkening Green.

Explanation.:- In these lines the poet says that children are tired and can no longer enjoy the play. The sun is going to set, so the sports of children come to an end. As birds gather round their nests to take rest, children gather near their mothers to fall asleep. And on the Echoing Green, no more sport is seen.

The Echoing Green Summary in English

The Echoing Green Introduction:

This poem has been taken from William Blake’s Songs of Innocence. We get a picture of the open green space with the cheerful shouts of children and the songs of birds. As the children play, the older people relax under an oak tree. These old people feel happy as they watch the children at play. They are reminded of their own childhood. John tries to forget the cares and miseries of his life. He thus shares the carefree laughter of the children. The poem shows a link between man and Nature.

The Echoing Green Central Idea:

'The Echoing Green' is written by William Blake.This poem gives us a beautiful message. The poem tells about three stages of life. The first stage is childhood. Rising sun, singing birds, playing children share idea of childhood playfulness. The second stage is maturity. The old people in the ground remember their past. They feel themselves in playing children. Sun set, darkness, games coming to an end suggest death, the last stage of life.
